Episode 10 of Chalkline Sports’ The Operator’s Edge webinar series was, “3 Reasons to Bank on Basketball.”

In this webinar, we share three reasons why basketball at the professional and collegiate level has gained traction and become the fastest growing betting American sport through the NBA’s support to uncover the existing popularity of sports betting. Watch the webinar replay here.

Here are three reasons why a sports fan should bank on basketball:

1. The NBA is the most progressive and embracing professional league towards betting.

The NBA has the 3rd highest amount of hours played of regular season games among American professional sports behind the NHL and MLB.

Immediately after the PASPA repeal in 2018, NBA agreed to allow MGM Resorts to sponsor the 2018 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

Following the Summer League, NBA and MGM agreed to the league’s first betting deal, which then followed a deal with the Stars Group at the end of 2018.

2. The NBA effectively acclimates fans to the new regulated environment.

The NBA has launched free-to-play bracket challenges and pick’em challenges in order to engage the user base.

By providing buckets of advanced stats to fans, the NBA is able to set up and promote games for fans to play throughout the season to engage the fanbase and inform them about the availability of information in the new betting environment.

3. Despite the NCAA being anti-betting, people love making brackets

The NCAA has a strict anti-betting policy, however the tradition for casual bettors each year to create and wager on brackets has transcended into a bridge between beliefs, politics, and society.

Each year, approximately $8.5bn are wagered on brackets during March Madness.
